Research Assistant

May 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

Flexible work schedules, great mentorship, and lots of opportunity to contribute and work on meaningful projects.

What I wish was different

More of a walk through when first starting out, everything seemed very overwhelming at first.

Advice

Reach out to professors in office hours and ask about their research projects or interests that they are currently working on. Not many students know how to get a research job and the most realistic way to get this role is by reaching out and asking questions directly to professors.

REU Researcher

May - July 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

The head of the program and his colleagues were great, the pay was good, Dr. Andrew Forbes was incredibly easy to contact and quick to reply, the other students selected were friendly. The program divided students into labs based on their interests, and my mentor (Dr. Forbes) was more than happy to try research that fit my interests but was outside his field. The support for the work was phenomenal as well. Iowa City is a great location set aside from the typical agriculture regions of the state, with plenty of summer events and festivals, art, hangout spots, and interesting travel destinations within a few hours of travel, or more often less, for weekend trips.

What I wish was different

With the program being its first time, it exceeded my expectations entirely. The only thing I might change is some mentors had their students work on their projects which were loosely based on the students' interests but may not be necessarily be a good fit.

Advice

Just apply everywhere you can! Cast a wide net so you don't put all your eggs in one basket. You'll have better opportunities and can then choose and save yourself stress from worrying about being selected to then being the selector. I almost didn't apply to this program because I applied to others, but I loved my experience this summer.
