Student Maintenance Helper

May 2017 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

They offer great hours. Monday-Friday 8-4:30. No nights, no weekend. Unless there is overtime offered, which is voluntary. I learned a lot of real world, practical skills. How to fix A/C units, fans, vacuums, kitchen appliances, etc. It has become helpful in my day to day life.

What I wish was different

I would have like to have learned to work with electrical, but, as students we weren’t allowed. Other than that, I have no complaints about the job.

Advice

This isn’t a very demanding job, but, you should always be on time and working on something. There is a lot to do and if one things falls through the cracks, so do many other things. Be proactive, have good problem solving skills, and be open to constructive criticism.

Office Assistant

May 2018 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I enjoyed the experience I gained by working on campus and working with various offices. I worked in the Orientation and Academic Retention office so I was able to learn about two different departments. It gave me a deeper insight into the University. I was able to work over the phone with students and also worked with faculty, which helped me create and strengthen intrapersonal relationships.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to communicate with students in person more often than over the phone. Since I have continued to work in this office since the summer, most students have been in the office. But I think talking in person is much more different than simply talking over the phone.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share with this experience is for students to put themselves out there! I would have never gotten this job if I had not made the decision one evening to apply. I had applied on a whim because I was considering staying in Iowa City for the summer, and it turned out to be the best decision I have made during my time at Iowa so far.
